Winemaker Katy Lovell is dedicated to creating poetry in the bottle from the finest sources she can farm and find. Her vineyard forays take her from the Santa Cruz Mountains, where she buys Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot, to the far reaches of Mendocino, where she picks beautiful old vine Carignane. The majority of her fruit comes from her vineyards in Livermore, where she established her first winery, Rios-Lovell, nearly two decades ago.
On the back label of each bottle is a poem by her partner. Joseph L. Naegele celebrating the magical union of two creative souls who live to share their passion with wine and poetry lovers everywhere. These two are a perfect union of passion and purpose. She’s the hands-on, do everything winemaker who drives the trucks, picks the grapes, runs the destemmer, adds the yeast, punches down, crushes, forklifts barrels, racks and tops off. He’s the attorney and educator by day (Santa Clara University), and the poet by night: he pens the poems that grace the back labels. We should mention that Katy also bottles, designs and prints her own labels: custom holiday labels are available for personal and corporate gift-giving. She is also an accomplished Oberlin-trained concert flutist, as well as a fabric artist, a craft she still practices when not blending, attending wine events or pouring in the tasting room. A mother of three teens, two at Los Gatos High, Katy is thrilled that her son, Zac, enjoys helping out in the winery.
Poetic Cellars is set in the tranquility of the Santa Cruz Mountains, amidst majestic oaks and the solitude of a country estate. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy fine wine in an unhurried atmosphere.

About the Wines
2004 Cabernet Sauvignon - Beautifully balanced, with classic Livermore Cab flavors, including cassis, coffee, dried cherries, blackberry brandy, truffles and baked plum. SILVER medalist at 2008 SF Chronicle.
2006 Syrah - Sweet rich aromas of baked plum tart, spicy sausage, ham and baked brie combine with wonderful flavors of plum tart, baked chile peppers, and sundried tomatoes.
2006 Petite Sirah - Big, full-bodied, intensely flavored with chocolate, dusty blackberries and leather notes. BRONZE medalist at 2008 SF Chronicle.
2006 Mourvedre - Smoky, earthy and gamey with rich aromas of warm clay and berry bushes. Flavors are clean and deft: a lovely pas de deux of cherries and cherry tomatoes, of elderberries and chives.
2003 Reserve Port - Sweet vivid flavors of blackberry, raspberry, raisins and ripe mission figs lead to a spicy finish in this blend of 50% Touriga and 50% Sousao. Intensely fruit-laden and delightful.
2007 Late Harvest Viognier - An exquisite dessert wine with inviting aromas of dried apricots, honey and bananas. On the palate, it’s ripe peaches, honey and pineapple. Perfect with Bananas Foster or soft cheeses.
